This collection consists of two letters: Captain A. R. Arter, Wilsons Landing, Virginia, June 23, 1864 and that of his son, G.M. Arter, Hanover, Ohio, February 20, 1919 to George Sullivan. The letters relate to Army of the Potomac activities, specifically, the destructive Civil War raid on the home of former president John Tyler, and Captain Arter's impressions of that activity and period. Each manuscript letter copy is accompanied by a typed transcript copy with annotations. Arter was a member of the 143rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry.
